When I came to this assignment and looked at the options, I was immediately drawn towards the option 3. The flowers seemed like an easy option; I love working with flowers. But after taking some time to reflect on my choice, I felt I had taken the easy route stayed in my comfort zone. Was I going to be pushing me, make me think harder and produce the interesting pieces?
After this reflection I revisited the options and decided that option 1 was the route I was going to take. I remember this being my first assignment and it seemed to take forever to complete and I struggled to engage with the assignment. I think this may have been down to how I had interpreted and over thought the process. Now with more experience, I feel I can develop the assignment further than I did previously.
Option 1 Strengthening a theme
Now I had decided I was going to develop the Natures Larder theme, I now had to decide what direction to take the theme in. I began by think of fruit and vegetables I found interesting, that had interesting textures and patterns. Logging my findings in the in my sketchbook in the form of a mind map.
I then decided to source the items, this helped me reduce the items I had on my list. Choosing items such as pomegranate, physalis, mushroom and strawberries. Looking at them through different camera lenses, observing the skin of the fruit as well as the inside of the fruit.
After discussing my idea with my tutor, I realised I needed to scale back my ideas and look at developing one item. I was keen to work with physalis fruit as I found the paper like casing and the bright orange berry hidden inside fascinating. But I think it would be limiting in my development process, perhaps it will be one to use in future work.
Although I originally wanted to go with one of the more colourful fruits, even starting some sketches of the strawberries. I realised that the route I was being drawn towards was the mushrooms, although nothing bright about them. The way they they are formed is fascinating and the difference in texture for the top to the underneath. I then set about sourcing different types of mushrooms, visiting some of the local Korean supermarkets for some weird and wonderful mushrooms. Picking a selection in varying sizes, shapes and colours.
Now I had my theme, I spent sometime looking over the mushrooms capturing different images of different angles of the mushrooms. Using a microscope lenses to capture the tiniest bits of detail.
I then sourced a selection papers, from brown parcel tags to A1 cream paper. Including textured handmade papers in my selection. Using a mixture of conventional and unconventional mark making tools and this time including colours. Using colour in the form of watercolour, gouache and pastel.
With a vast collection of images to work from, I feel I have enough to develop my concepts further.
